Kurukshetra - Malayalam Movie Review
October - 21 - 2008
Kurukshetra is one of those exceptional war action dramas that is rich in rewards and insights. This hard-hitting film is a fitting tribute not just to the much-loved soldiers we have lost in combat, but also to the departed souls who spilled their blood across the LOC.
Almost ten years since diplomacy backed up with determination and force saw the Indian flag fly high once again over the rocky terrains of Kashmir, Kurukshetra endeavors to recapture those decisive operational and strategic modi operandi of the Indian Armed Forces that led the country and its people to a proud conquest. After a pretty sluggish start, the film moves ahead in full steam as Colonel Mahadevan (Mohanlal) nobly pilots his troops up the Kargil Mountains to victory and golden history.
The film does take an emphatic anti-war stand that it depicts through gruesome details. It has a certain-to-concern-you assertion that’s less about war grounds and weaponry and more about the intrinsic nature of mankind. This commanding film is often tormenting to watch, but it can also be shockingly engaging as it skillfully blends chilling wit, with plenty of misery and terror.
A lot of it succeeds on account of a script that’s kept taut, as it dabbles with some very valid themes. There are plenty of personality conflicts at play here, as well as the excruciating aggravation that simmers inside men who really look forward to putting constructive changes into effect, and yet remain helplessly wedged in the intricacies of the red tape.
Much of what we get to see on screen is pleasantly familiar. Ravi has created it within out; perceiving it through his own eyes and transferring the spectator to the role of an overwhelmed observer gawking at the structured sequence of affairs. Whether or not you have brushed up on your 90’s history, it’s a story that’s general knowledge, and hence Kurukshetra lays down all the events on a salver before us. There is the notorious coffin scam, as well as a real efficient dig at a prominent photo journalist who had strived to wage the war with her camera lens.
Kurukshetra wouldn’t be half the film it is, if it were not for the stellar performance of its lead actor. Mohanlal as Colonel Mahadevan is painfully authentic in his depiction of the trials and tribulations of the war veteran. Despite appearing slightly bloated, there is an admirable visual restraint in his feat that’s remarkably absorbing.
No doubt, the battle scenes are fairly imposing in their implementation and efficiently captured on film (Lokanathan), and yet the film at times lacks the imperative knack to sustain a steady surge throughout. There are occasions when it seems pretty confused; especially the supposedly poignant ones that get stretched beyond possible limits. Subsequent to making an instructive point, it reiterates its philosophy continually, to the point of appearing emotionally manipulative. The sentimental clichés mar an otherwise excellent film.
Regardless of some slip-ups, Kurukshetra offers a convincing portrait of the inanity of war. It’s a bombshell of a film that blows up your war-film prejudices into smithereens.

Rathri Mazha - Malayalam Movie Review
October - 21 - 2008
From a director who has given us memorable films like Chillu, Meenamasaththile Sooryan, Vachanam, Deivaththinte Vikruthikal, Mazha etc, we can’t but expect well-crafted and sensitive movies. And that’s what Lenin Rajendran delivers with his latest release Rathrimazha. Compared to the trash dished out these days in the name of Malayalam cinema, Rathrimazha indeed is ‘class’ stuff.
Harikrishnan and Meera are happily married. On the night of their marriage, lying in one another’s arms, they go down memory lane and recollect how they got to know each other and how they eventually fell in love. Meera, who was born and brought up in a hill-side village and who was in the city doing her job, had in fact responded to Hari’s matrimonial ad placed on the Net, just for curiosity’s sake. Hari responded promptly and soon they had regular communication going on, even doing video chat once in a while. A romantic affair blossomed between the two, though they had never met each other in person.
When the day came for the two to meet, Hari failed to turn up. Meera naturally felt as if she had been cheated. But the truth was exactly the opposite. Hari had no intention of cheating Meera. The fact was he didn’t want to keep her in the dark about a rather unpleasant truth about him. And when he disclosed that to Meera, the world itself changed for the young girl who had been intensely in love with this romantic looking guy, who earlier had been a dancer working in a troupe run by an acclaimed danseuse named Mohini. For Meera, her sincerity and love for Hari itself came under the clouds. For Hari, things seemed to have reached a point of no return. What all happened then forms the rest of the plot.
It’s indeed a pleasure to see Vineeth handling such a meaty role as this, and that too a dance-oriented one, with so much ease and style. Meera Jasmine as Meera gives a good performance. Chithra Iyer, whom we had known mostly as a singer, is the big surprise donning the role of danseuse Mohini with the ease of a natural actor. Laloo Aalex as Mohini’s husband Balashankar is good too.
One of the main highlights of Rathrimazha is the excellent cinematography by S. Kumar, who had mesmerized us with his works earlier too. Add to this the songs composed by Ramesh Narayanan (who incidentally won the State Award for the Best Music Director in 2006 for this movie) and the excellent dance choreography, and the film seems to be poetry on celluloid at least in places. The way the film explores the realm of complicated human relationships deserves special mention.
Lenin Rajendran, who has scripted the movie as well, needs to be appreciated for giving such a cinematic dimension to the short story (titled ‘Website’) penned by writer P. Chandramathi. Rathrimazha is a film to be seen and remembered.
Cast & Crew:
Cast: Vineeth, Meera Jasmine, Manoj K. Jayan,Biju Menon, Lalu Alex, Cochin Haneefa, Dinesh Panicker, Sudheer, Rajendran, Bhanupriya, Kulappulli Leela
Director: Lenin Rajendran
Producer: Green Cinema House
Lyrics: Kaithapram - Ramesh Narayanan
Cinematography: Madhu Neelakandan

Sweeny Todd : The Bloddy Masterpiece
Speaking about sweeny todd, it's a bloody gorgeous movie.
Words sometimes don't suffice to describe some masterpieces. Tim Burton's Sweeny Todd is one of them.
Tim burton's direction and blazing performances from John depp and Helena carter upholds this movie as a must watch for any season.
Sweeny todd is a bloodcurdling vengeance of a barber Benjamin (John depp) unjustly sent to prison on false charges by a rogue Judge Turpin (alan rickman) coveted his beautiful wife.
The story is damn well picturized and the movie makes you feel that you are watching the 19th century london.
If you are a Hemophobiac, stay away from Sweeny Todd. There's blood. And lot of it. Each time Sweeny Todd uncovers his glittery razors, he'll feed it with lot's of blood.
The movie opens with the barber Benjamin Barker returning to London on a boat as the embittered and enraged Sweeney Todd after 15 years in prison in Australia. He returns to his old mansion with the ground floor occupied by Mrs.Lovett (Helena carter).
Mrs. Lovett recognises Sweeny todd as Benjamin, and informs that his wife was raped by the Judge and she committed suicide. She adds that his daughter Johanna is now under the home prison of the scoundrel Judge.
Sweeney Todd’s sole mission in life now is to extract revenge and kill judge Turpin and his henchman Beadle (Timothy Spall).
But the Barber turns into a real murder maniac, who first kills a rival barber and mountebank Pirelli (Sacha Baron Cohen) for trying to blackmail him and then a whole bunch of innocent peopla as they sit on the barber’s chair for a shave.
There are multiple love stories running in parallel in Sweeny Todd - Mrs.Lovett’s love for Sweeney, his sailor friend Anthony Hope’s love for Johanna and Judge Turpin’s love/lust for Johanna.
John dep's perfomance is class, what an actor. Equally blazing perfomance is delivered by Helena carter.
Stephen Joshua's music is such a treat - as the movie is a musical melodrama, the music is the prime factor, and hey how marvellously Stephen succeeds in his part.
Cinematography is Superb. Direction is top notch from Tim burton.
Overall, Sweeny Todd, is one of the rear movies that leaves an impact on you. I wonder how the audiences who clap for the craps dumbing at bollywood et' all will accept this marvelous movie. Go and grab the DVD, coz such timeless classics are quite rare.
Verdict : Gorgeous movie
