I went to watch the film with zero expectations. Here are my thoughts:
Positives:
-Daddy Cool is a simple movie which delivers what it promises.
-Movie is not extraordinary in terms of content but it does not pretend to be one either.
-It's a different film compared to what the rest of the movies offer in South India.
-The technical side is very good (Camera, Direction, etc.), and the director has to be appreciated for some creative touches (Ex: the Dev D effect for Daniel Balaji to convey his eccentricity).
-First half is enjoyable with fun moments.
-Cast: Mammootty has done his job well but the movie does not really demand much from him (Some of his negatives below). Dhananjayan was very good. Daniel Balaji was a pleasant surprise. If anyone else was cast, it could have been the weakness of the film. He made a subtle performance whereas others may have overacted. His dubbing especially sounded real and unique. Rest of the cast was solid except Richa Pallod.
Negatives:
-Richa Pallod sometimes made me wonder if it was a telegu dubbed movie. Her expressions were ok (sometimes over) but learning the dialogues would have made it better.
-The item song could have been easily avoided. Does not make an effect and looks out of place.
-Although sometimes it was used effectively, the slow motion was a little over done.
-Songs were below mediocre, but that's the case with a majority of the Malayalam movies (Really friends, Compared to the old days, what's happening to Malayalam film music?)
-The fights were what we usually see in movies these days. Nothing great. Mammooka should really try to move a little more. He seems very lazy. He reminds me of a geometry compass (fixed at the centre and rotates).
-The movie is a good ordinary film, but it didn't really get me or the audience involved in it emotionally. Most of them seemed to have enjoyed it for the comedy bits in the first half, it would have been better if they made us feel for the father and son.
-Last Negative point has to be a little elaborate:
Mammootty... As an actor, it is fantastic that he has maintained himself so well physically. Especially his face. But he looks like a very good looking 40+ year old at his best. It was hard to digest that he has a son of that age. That is one of the main reasons why we don't feel that much for the father and son because it does not look real. Richa Pallod looks like his daughter. I think it's time that he should take up more mature roles.
I know a lot of hardcore mammooty fans didn't mind the age difference. Infact, it's amazing that he did 'pappayude swantham appoos' in early 90s and even after a decade and a half he can be considered for the same part, but it looked fake to me.
Please mammooka, choose roles carefully! I don't even want to talk about how comical Pattanathil Bootham was... frankly that movie does not deserve a review. Leave those characters to Dileep or Jayaram, you take up serious roles and if you feel like doing comedy, do a sequel to Rajamanikyam.
But it's good that Parunthu, MB, LIS, EPB and DC have released and failed. All these movies have increased our thirst to see Mammootty in a serious, artistic and dominant role. Hopefully, it will be fulfilled when we see him in his next historical release.
Final Verdict:
Overall, a neat debut from Ashiq Abu, but my only problem was that he should have cast someone else for the Daddy's role... or at least changed the title to Grand-Daddy Cool.
But cant agree with u regarding Daddy's role in ur verdict. Who else should do it, other than Mammukka, with the actors we have in malayalam film industry now?

DC failed? its been just 10 days now. The movie has done pretty well @ BO till now. Its too early to predict its BO status.
