ROBINHOOD the ROCKINGHOOD - Movie Review : Sure Hit !!
Theatre : Ekm Padma
Show : Matinee
Status : Full
Story
The story deals with a never before attempted theme in Malayalam Cinema, i.e ATM theft. How and why the protagonist i.e Robinhood steals from ATMs and how an intelligent detective unravels the mystery forms the story. With ample number of twists and racy nature of story-telling, the film is an enjoyable ride right from the word GO !!
Characters & Performances
Prithviraj plays Venketesh a physics professor and Robinhood the ATM theif. Prithvi plays it with ease and style. His body language as the two-faced Venky is very convincing. He excels in the action as well song sequences (Priyanu Maathram song is good only because of him). But the role is not so challenging for Prithvi, really wished the makers had developed the character a little more.
Naren gets the meatier role as a womanizing and eccentric private detective, Alexander Felix, who arrives to investigate the ATM theft. His performance is just OK.. nothing more nothing less. Though his role is well written with some good lines, somehow a certain artificiality is felt in his performance. If this role was done by someone like Indrajith, I'm sure he would have stolen the show.
Bhavana is Roopa, the bank's representative to assist Naren in the investigation. Her performance was satisfactory.
Samvritha as Prithvi's one-way lover & Jayasurya as the assistant Commissioner of Police have under-developed characters, so they couldnt leave their mark.
Biju Menon is another actor who's given a very good performance. Others like Lena, Salim Kumar, Jaffer Idukki have done their part well.
Screenplay
Sachi-Sethu have done a commendable job. Such a sophisticated hi-tech subject has not been done in Malayalam before. The minute details of the how the ATM theft is accomplished is very convincingly done. Also the twists in the story are very exciting. I only wish they had developed some of the characters a little more and filled some very minor holes in the script.
Direction
Joshiy did not disappoint me, though I was expecting to get disappointed. The racy nature of the film is maintained throughout for which Joshy should get a pat on the back. But where he falters, is the overall look and feel of the film, which looks a bit dated and in extracting the best out of the actors. The song picturizations are below par. I really wished some new generation director did this film as the film deserves some more style.
Songs, Stunts & Technical stuff
Only the Priyanu Maathram song is visually good. Prithvi rocks with his ultra cool style and moves. Parannu vanna Painkili song is just ok. The party song cud have been avoided all together. Thank God, the lousy title song, Jaalam Mayajaalam is not used anywhere in the film.
Stunts are good, but not as stylish as PuthiyaMukham. Well, its suits the film.
Camera & BGM were just ok. But such a subject deserves better.
To summarize,
The film is Racy, Youthful and above all Entertaining. Thats what matters at the end of the day.
Verdict : Sure Hit
