Character Panorama - Mangalassery Neelakantan (Devasuram)
************************************************** *********
The title Devasuram epitomises the union of the Supreme Being and the evil in one man. It represents dual facets of the protagonist‘s personality.
On the one hand he is a lecherous unruly rogue, obstinate and wayward, but on the other hand he has a heart of gold towards his companions and is a connoisseur of art & music.
His relatives regard Neelakantan as the archetypical spoilt brat. But Neelan reveres his mother, albeit in a discreet manner and takes pride in his father‘s aristocratic legacy. His arrogant, disdainful self – esteem stems from this reassuring sense of inherited continuity.
But the revelation from his mother on her deathbed that he is her illegitimate son leaves his self–esteem in tatters. From then on we see a Neelan humbled by a profound sense of of remorse & contrition.
Lal as Neelakantan weaves his intricate magic on the mesmerised audience. From the towering, all–conquering firebrand Neelan in the first half to the resentful man of mellow wisdom in the latter half, he walks a tightrope between overplay and underplay.
The entire spectrum of his acting finesse is at display when Napolean holds down a paralysed Lal with his foot. In silent fury, Lal grits his teeth so hard that a stitch on his forehead comes undone. You could almost feel your jaw clenching along with Lal‘s --now that was a bloody great display of acting (plus a smashing screenplay moment).
They say that a great actor is an illusionist who convinces spectators that they are seeing something, which really isn’t there and gets them involved in it.
Lal as Neelakantan satisfies that virtuously.
